There are several different types of neural prostheses currently on the market or undergoing testing for treating voiding incontinence caused by spinal cord injury. Individuals with an injury above the sacral levels of the spinal cord have a loss of bladder control. These patients develop a variety of urologic complications that include an increased risk of systemic infection.

An important aspect of the clinical management of these individuals is the restoration of effective micturition and continence. The Finetech-Brindley Bladder controller was developed by Finetech Ltd. in the U.K.. It features an implanted stimulator and electrodes and an external
user controller that the patient activates when voiding is desired. The product was previously sold in the U.S. by NeuroControl Corp. under the name VoCare.
