New York University is particularly known for work in rehabilitation and brain plasticity. The Spinal Cord Injury Center at NYU was the first to develop the concept of secondary tissue damage in spinal cord injury. Its success is evidenced by the widespread use of drugs it helped develop and numerous awards it has received from the National Institutes of Health for research accomplishments.
The center has engaged in many clinical trials that have developed new ways to assess clinical damage and new pharmacological and surgical treatments. The center is designated as the Regional Spinal Cord Trauma Center for Manhattan by the New York City Emergency Medical Service.
The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center has as its goals to develop knowledge, equipment, and techniques that facilitate and expedite the rehabilitation of physically impaired, enabling them to lead more comfortable, functional, and independent lives. Located in the VA Medical Center's NYHHS campus in Manhattan, the laboratory's research includes a broad range of areas, including using Computer Aided Design & Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) for prostheses, orthoses, and custom orthopedic footwear; computer modeling of the mechanical properties of tissue and finite element analysis of its response to loading; and gait analysis of lower limb amputees, orthosis and pedorthics patients.
Established over 20 years ago, the Center for Brain Health conducts research on brain changes associated with age and on the early diagnosis and treatment of memory loss, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes. The Center is composed of three main laboratories: Neuroimaging, Physiology, and Neuropsychology.
Known for developing novel procedures for brain imaging, the Neuroimaging Laboratory is funded by the National Institutes of Health to develop diagnostic tests for the detection of persons at increased risk for developing memory deficits and Alzheimer's Disease.
