Since ancient times, the human brain has never ceased to create wonders. Because of the brain, we can "fly" in the blue sky like a bird, "dive" deep into the sea to uncover the secret of the ocean and even explore other mysterious planets in the Universe. The ability of the human brain is amazing, and so is the formation and workings of the brain. Within 9 months starting from the forming of the embryo, a single cell miraculously develops into a sophisticated and complicated "system" called the brain.


With more than one million million (10000000000) brain cells, each brain cell (neuron) contains a vast electrochemical complex and a powerful data processing system. Each cell has a central body with tens, hundreds, or thousands of tentacles that are called dendrites. These dendrites receives incoming pulses and acts as the message carrier while one particularly large and long branch called the axon, is the main exit for information transmitted by that cell. Each dendrite and axon may range from a millimeter to 1.5 meters in length. The brain grows as we learn and every time when we learn a new thing or have a new experience, a new connection between neurons are formed. This biochemical electromagnetic pathway is also known as 'memory trace'.


Every time you have a thought, the biochemical resistance along the pathway carrying that thought is reduced. It is like trying to clear a path through a forest. The first time is a struggle because you have to fight your way through the undergrowth. The second time you travel that way will be easier because of the clearing you did on your first journey. The more times you travel that path, the less resistance there will be, until, after many repetitions, you have a wide, smooth track which requires little or no clearing. A similar function occurs in your brain: the more you repeat patterns or maps of thought, the less resistance there is to them. Therefore, and of greater significance, repetition in itself increases the probability of repetition. In other words, the more times a 'mental event' happens, the more likely it is to happen again.


Returning to the forest analogy, the more tracks and pathways you can create and use, the clearer, faster and more efficient your thinking will become. The boundaries of human intelligence can, in many ways, be related to the brain's ability to create and use such patterns.

Although genetic inheritance is a major factor in establishing the quality of the brain and its neurons, it is far from being conclusive in determining the eventual results. Genes, the chemical blueprints of life, establish the framework of the brain, but then the environment takes over and provides the customized finishing touch. Regardless of the original quality of a child's brain cells, the quality of brain material the child has can be helped or hurt by the amount of exercise it gets.
As the foremost educators of our children, it is both exhilarating and awesome to realize that we have the abilities to alter the structure of their brains. We can indeed provide an environment in which children can reach their full potential. Early childhood experience not only influence development and behavior, they can actually affect intelligence.


Simply put, a child's IQ is not pre-determined but can be nurtured and improved, if the right method is used.
